Eadwig is the natural born son of Egbehrt, a minor Friedlander noble. He was much loved by his father, and trained well in combat. You can fill in the details as you like... He was thrown from his house and sent packing. He arrives in Bretain in Ottshaven, carrying only his sword, shield, armour, and 200 pieces of gold given by his father...
Bastards are not trusted, mostly because they are "sneaky"
Eadwig's father was an honourable man. Egbehrt was himself well-renowned as a fighter, having led raids on Bretain in his younger years. It is believed that Eadwig was the son of a concumbine he had taken during his time as a soldier, though Eadwig's father had never enlightened him upon the circumstances surrounding his birth. The eldest of Egbehrt's legitimate children is 10 years Eadwig's junior. Eghbehrt raised Eadwig as his own, though stopped short of legitimisation. He taught his son how to fight and look out for himself, knowing that life as a bastard would be tough.
One day, around two months ago, Egbehrt died. Although his death was accepted to be of natural causes, some, including Eadwig, felt that there was something suspicious about the whole affair. Eadwig attempted to raise these concerns with Egbehrt's widow who was ruling on behalf of her young son, but he was forced out of his home with the pittance his father had willed to him.
Eadwig, with nowhere else to go left to Bretain, where he planned to make a living for himself, perhaps raise an army and return to Friesland to seek vengeance. However, he lands in Ottshaven, and Bretain is no longer the gold mine his father had often spoke about. There are rival clans competing for domination over the remnants of the once lucrative Reman Bretain. Armies are not cheap, and can rarely be bought with the promise of plunder alone. Eadwig will have to prove himself in his new home if he is to earn the loyalty of any man. With this pressure, and the weight of his father's death still hanging over his head, he stumbled into a tavern and spends most of his time drinking and fighting.
